When an Unserious Reader Gets Serious
My preferences in books and characters are not the same for other readers, and I would never expect them to be! I am hoping that anyone reading my blog is not hyper-sensitive and judgmental but let’s be real.
I would never in a million years judge a reader or bash them in any way for liking the books they read. Why would anyone want to bring another person down for something that makes them happy or excited? That’s crazy!
I’m writing this piece because I don’t want others to think I support or justify specific acts just because I read certain books or express love toward certain characters.
A lot of the books I read are dark and disturbing, and most of the time they’re dark romances. These books usually involve a morally gray love interest that does or says things that are definitely not okay to say in the real world. Some readers will stay clear of these books because they don’t see these stories and characters are “morally gray” but are offended or triggered by them.
I completely understand how these books are not for everyone, but they are what I like to read. I hope that anyone who reads my blogs or reviews won’t be offended [i am a pathological people pleaser] but that’s just not realistic. Not everyone is going to agree with what I am saying and that’s okay!
I like the books I like. You like the books you like. They might not be the same but there’s no need to bully each other over it.
I do recognize the emotional triggers that these dark books will have on readers but I am hoping that my note of the “Trigger Warnings” before each review will help them decide whether or not to read.
If you are not a dark romance reader, find it completely absurd, or are just a very sensitive person about graphic topics: You do not have to read any of my pieces that are labeled “dark romance.” There are other genres and tropes you can read about that do interest you.
Resources & Non-Profits
I have also done some research on triggering topics and tropes that you might want to know more about. I am not an expert by any means but I am aware of the seriousness of the kinds of tropes or acts in the books I read.
The “Resources & Non-Profits” tab will bring you to a list of blogs that talk about triggering topics. They also include resources for any reader, or anyone in general, who has experienced a form of trauma. It could also help someone currently struggling physically and mentally. There are also articles on non-profit organizations that are specific to helping others heal.
These articles are meant to hopefully help and educate others about real-life struggles.
